Color fail.

Color fail.

Howdy folks,

Well today has been interesting. I started trying to figure out coloring and it didn't go very well as you will see in the last panel of page 15, if I don't fix it in by the time it posts. Still, I should probably leave it up with everything else I'm doing to sort of show my progress. Or I could fix it and put the old page up as an extra piece. I did spend hours working on it, so it's a tough call. I will figure it out later.

The problem stems from the fact that I am really new at Photoshop. I've literally been using the program seriously for about three weeks and I have some basics down now. I can do decent shading as long as I stay in black and white. If you are still reading, you will see the results in about two weeks. I'm running with a six week buffer right now, so the stuff I'm working on tonight you won't see for a while.

My friend Melissa lent me a how to digitally color the Hi Fi way. A really nice book, the only problem is that I don't learn so well from a book. I would much rather have a person to ask questions to so I can fully understand why things are done in a certain way. Learning something from the ground up is important for me so I have a chance to wrap my brain around it.

Anyway, there are a few things going on in the book where it seems that they assume you had more experience with the program than I currently have. They set up things for you but didn't really cover what they were short cutting, and why you should do them if you don't want to use the script they provided with the method.

Needless to say, I couldn't get things working and so I tried to do things in a more basic way. Sure, I did get a panel colored, and I was able to do one or two things described in the book, but it did not come out at all like they illustrated. And it took me hours to do it. Shading in black and white is a lot different than coloring. That much I found out for sure today.

Now I know there are those of you out there that would pick this stuff up in a second, and I am really happy for you, but that's not me. I struggle with things and I have to fight to get some concepts down. Lack of patience is a big hurdle. But for this, to learn to do a better comic is enough of a motivator to push me, and I'm trying really hard.

So it's back to youtube to go over the very basics of coloring. Learning how to do it in Photoshop from the bottom up.

In other news, I saw the new Amazing Spider Man movie today. I liked it. I liked Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben, I like Dennis Leary as Capt. Stacy, I liked the costume, and I liked that they gave spidey his web shooters. The choice of the Lizard as the main villain was also a good one. Now that being said, I still thought this version was pretty much on par with the Sam Rami Spiderman movie.

I'm debating watching Abraham Lincoln, Vampire hunter. I have a really hard time getting past the title, but I've heard is was a pretty solid flick. I will let you know either way.

See you next update
