Jolly is reciting the Dwarven prayer for the fallen as he prepares to face the dragons.

He is starting to piece together what happened in here. There is a heavy mix of enemies along with the Dwarves and little to no sign of a struggle. Something else happened in this place.

This is nothing short of win or die. There is no place to hide. He just has to do the one thing he has little talent for...he has to out wit both dragons.

Scarlan world lore:

The prayer for the dead:

This particular prayer is to 'the Maker', Jolly is a purist and considers only the Maker as a true deity and protector of his kin. Other dwarves are divided between some of the minor gods of Scarlan. The 'Elementalists' have a large following among the clans, especially the earthen spirits.

Jollys own father (a stone smith) is a follower of the earth spirits, something the two strongly differ on.

I'm not much of a prayer person, but I managed to make it though this page OK. I would like to find a better word than 'Amen' to close a prayer. Anyone have any suggestions?

Other news;

I have another shout out to the fine folks at Game Depot for; a) having a freaking awesome game shop! and b) letting me put up a flyer for the comic on their bulletin board. Thanks guys!

I have a Halloween comic that will post on the 31st, so check that out before you go party hard in some strange cemetery!

Yay! He finally has clothes! Suggestion for prayer ending: "So mote it be".

Jolly is now geared up, I do like the word 'Mote'. I might try using that.

A moving page on several levels.
Dust is significant somehow.

Draginbeard
Thank you. I wanted to show a serious and respectful moment. These are his dear friends and clan-mates who died here. This was not to be how that battle was supposed to go.

The dust is definitely significant to both the past, and possibly the future.

Great "Gear up" page! The prayer added made it quite emotional! Reading about your worlds lore feels no different than if I'm reading about, say, Greek or Norwegian folk lore for instance!

Thanks. I grew up Catholic, we know how to be grim. =)

A lot of thought went into how involved the characters would be in matters of faith. Its probably one of the most difficult and serious sides to the story.

The story is not meant to come across as preachy, but instilling characters with faith in something gives them a grounding, and makes them a little more real to me.

I'm catholic myself! I know where you're coming from! Your story doesn't come off as preachy at all! It feels more like folk lore but definetly has that belief in faith aspect in your characters. In this comic it's very well balanced!

I gave a hint as to my religious backfground in this issue of mad dog, by having the cross in the background! ;D

Oh I wasnt worried so much about this page being preachy. I do, however, have things ahead that will test belief in morality, free will, and faith. Jolly will have to make some decisions and I'm trying to make sure that these aren't meant as lessons to anyone other than the characters in the story.

But I'm also thinking of having a Gnome explode for no apparent reason. I might need to check my own moral compass this week...

Did he... did he put on chainmail over his bare chest?

*Jolly slays the dragons. He looks at the bodies of his mighty enemies, clears his throath, still sore from breathing the noxious fumes, and rights his clothes. He then yelps like a puppy when the links bite his nipple.*

LOL Oh yeah, nothing like pinching links of chain on a hairy chest!

But yes, he is wearing a quilt shirt beneath the chain. The vest is workman leather (which is semi thick, but still flexible) stitched in sheaf style metal scales.

Its not as good as the chain and scale mix he usually wears, but you take what you can get.

I love Game Depot! The lady I met, I think her name was Patti, she was so nice!

I need a second job to afford games these days tho...

The whole time I was drawing the battle of Spiral Tower, it was Helms Deep that I kept seeing in my head, especially the part with elven archers.

Such a great battle.

So be it. So say we all. Amon, By your will. Oh, and of course....Let's get ready to rrrruumble !
Draginbeard 29th Oct 2012, 7:58 AM edit delete reply
Draginbeard
'By your command.' 'Its clobbering time!' You don't know how many of these I went though to find something appropriate. All I came up with is 'Amen', and even that doesn't fit.

Uuuuurgh, I love this page!

I just love little cultural references like that prayer that show what their world is like.

Thanks! =) I'm hoping that even with all the silly stuff I add in, I can still keep things a little bit grounded.

I have that problem too, with Geo-pi. I can't put too much silly culture stuff that I really enjoy reading about for the sake of the story. I have to watch what I put in the comic otherwise there's be a whole chapter just on the customs and lifestyles of Ul-ah's people.

Draginbeard
I decided that I can add in those kinds of things as they come up, or yeah, I could do PAGES of lore, little of which you need to know in order to follow the story.

I do intend to put up an expansive world lore piece as an extra page eventually, but right now getting the pages done and in the buffer is my priority.

Hooray for an awesome gear-up scene! I like the prayer too, though I could not come up with a replacement for "amen". I was thinking of a word in dwarven language, but then people might get confused on what it means to replace. "Amen" still works here anyway.

Can't wait to see fully geared Jolly!

Fridays update (which l fondly named "Go get me something to eat you with ") shows Jolly armed and ready!

Things lighten up a little as this first chapter races to the end. More surprises yet to come, so hold on to your arm hair!

Thanks. =) I think the first time I saw a 'Gearing up' Sequence, it was in the first Mad Max movie. That's what I had in my head as I was putting this together. I was trying for that kind of cinematic feel.
